About the Test
- MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress
- Developed by experts at Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) using over 40 years of experience
- Measures a student’s proficiency in math, literacy, and science against grade-level standards
- Predicts how much growth a student should achieve over the coming year
- Many schools are now using MAP to help inform instruction and measure student growth
- Conducted twice a year (beginning and end of the school year) to help teachers, parents, and students understand their proficiency
Test Format
- A computer-adaptive test made up of 4 components:
- Reading
- Language Usage
- Mathematics
- Science (some schools include this)
- Format: Primarily multiple-choice, but now includes other interactive question types (e.g., drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank)
- Time: Untimed, but each section typically takes 45-60 minutes. Students can work at their own pace.
- Scoring: RIT Score – an equal-interval scale that measures a student’s academic growth over time, like a ruler. It is not a percentage or grade-level equivalent.
